Designing and building with Wild Swimscapes
At Wild Swimscapes, the journey to creating a natural swim pond begins well before any earth is moved. We approach each project as a collaboration between the client, the land and the living systems that will one day shape the water. From the first conversation to the final handover the process is steady thoughtful and respectful. The aim is to form a pond that settles into the garden and feels as if it has always belonged there. Beauty, longevity and ecological balance guide every stage of the work.
1. Initial consultation & site assessment
The process begins with a detailed conversation about how the client imagines using the water. We look and listen to the rhythms of the garden and walk the site with care. We study the contours, the soil, the light, the existing planting and the wildlife that already moves through the space. Understanding the land in its current state is essential because the design grows from what is already present. This first meeting sets the foundation for a pool that feels rooted and personal.
2. Design & planning
With a clear sense of the client’s vision and the character of the land Charlie begins to shape a design that works in harmony with its surroundings. Plant based filtration zones gentle natural forms and native planting are considered from the outset. If the design includes a sauna a seating space or a timber structure these are woven in so they feel connected rather than added on. Sustainable materials and simple practical solutions are chosen wherever possible. The result is a plan that looks beautiful and functions as a living ecosystem.
3. Excavation & groundworks
With plans finalised, we begin excavation, carefully shaping the swim zone, regeneration area, and filtration zones. For sloped sites, we construct stone walls or retaining banks to provide stability. Throughout this stage, we take great care to minimise environmental impact and preserve existing natural features.
4. Installing the liner & filtration zone
After the structure is formed the waterproof layer is added. Depending on the site this may involve clay, compacted natural materials or a high quality ecological membrane. The biological filtration system is then built, with gravel beds and native aquatic plants placed to support natural water flow and gentle biological cleaning. Wildlife habitats and landscape features are also shaped at this stage, including boulders, shallow beach areas, stepping stones, decking and diving rocks that help the pond feel both immersive and naturally connected to its surroundings. The result is clear chemical-free water and a pond that behaves like a small wild body of water.
5. Surrounding landscaping & planting
Once the pond is secure and the filtration system is established the surrounding landscape is shaped. We plant native species wetland marginal plants and meadow plants in arrangements that look grown rather than arranged. The planting brings wildlife into the space and gives the pond a soft and lived in feel. The aim is always to create a settled landscape that moves and matures with the seasons.
6. Finishing touches & monitoring
As the final stages of the build come together, the pond is filled, planted and ready to swim in immediately. Features such as wood-fired saunas, decked platforms and quiet seating areas are completed using natural materials that sit comfortably within the landscape. Every element is designed to feel calm, considered and connected, creating a space that feels established and ready to enjoy from the moment the project is finished.
7. Client briefing & maintenance guidance
Before the project is finished Charlie spends time guiding the client through the life of their new pond. He explains how the plants support the water how the filtration works and how the seasonal changes influence the system. The ponds are designed to be naturally low maintenance but he offers ongoing support for clients who prefer a helping hand. The handover leaves clients confident comfortable and ready to enjoy the water.
